Looking out over Riddell's bay

lookingoutoverriddellsbay.jpg

This photo' was taken from the road leading up to the Gibb's Hill lighthouse. The view is towards the north-west and the town of St. George. The farthest point of land one can see in the distance is approximately 22 kilometres away--that is, almost 2/3 the length of the entire island. As can be seen here, Bermuda's landscape is green and lush. Visible too is the local architecture featuring colourfully-painted limestone houses sporting shining white limestone slate roofs. The limestone roof serves an important purpose. Bermuda has no fresh water ponds, streams, or lakes. Rainwater falling on the roofs is channeled into large cisterns under the houses. Too many weeks without a heavy rain isn't a good thing.
