Christa lived with Rick, Mary, and their family for three years while she was a student at Prairie Junior High and High School. Over the course of nine years the Bartons were "parents" to a total of 14 Asian students. Many of their "children," now in college or university, return to Three Hills regularly to visit mum and dad Barton.
