2005 was a bumper year for farmers in central Alberta. Though the drought conditions seemed poised to decimate another year's yields of barley, canola, and wheat, last-minute rains in mid-June spurred the growth of all the cereal crops. In the above photo', the farmer is swathing--cutting the crop and laying it down in rows--canola in preparation for combining a week or two later. As it was, the weather turned foul mid-September and this field was never combined. What remains of the crop come late-Spring thaw will be combined to use as cattle or swine feed at less than 20% its original market worth.
