Two years after the Bartons arrived in central Alberta, the region began to experience a drought. For the past seven years the drought has deepened in what meteorologists say is 12 year cycle which occurs every couple of centuries. Rick and Mary remember viewing this natural pond on a farm just outside Three Hills soon after settling in Three Hills. At that time the water level was higher than the horses' backs as seen in the photo' above. Similar-sized ponds, and even small lakes around the province have completely dried up, and the general level of the central Alberta water table has dropped significantly. Local farmers continue to pray for rain.
